How
to aim an Ostwind |
The
Ostwind was a successor to the Flakpanzer IV
Mobelwagen (Armed with 37mm Flak 43 L/89) -
"interim solution" produced before
the introduction of real the Flakpanzer. In
July of 1944, prototype of Ostwind (Eastwind)
- an air defense armored vehicle build on Panzer
IV's proven chassis was produced. Its design
was very similar to that of Flakpanzer IV Wirbelwind
(Whirlwind) which prototype was build in May
of 1944 and was to become the first true Flakpanzer.
Both vehicles were build on retired or battle
damaged Panzer IV (mainly Ausf F/G) chassis/components
returned from the front for major repairs. With
regards to Aces High, when attempting to shoot
down enemy aircraft with an Ostwind one will
find that while in position 2 (Gunners position),
the view is obstructed and very limited. This
can be overcome with a few simple key strokes. |

|
| With the screen at
normal view the gun sight is hardly practical
and tends to be a hindrance more than something
serving a functional purpose. |
With the screen at
full zoom the gun sights cross hairs tend to be
obtrusive also. Also it is next to impossible
to get a good lead shot in this view. |
| There is however a
suitable medium. If you ever wondered how someone
shot you down when you were 1.5 to 2k away from
their Ostwind, they probably used the following
technique. |
1.
Go to the Gunner's Position (Position 2). |
|
| 2. Zoom in all the
way while in Position 2. |
|
| 3. Place your Mouse
Cursor on the center of the gun sight cross hair. |
|
4. Now Zoom all
the way out to normal view. Then hit the PG
UP Key on your keyboard.
Your view should now look like this - |
|
| 5. When engaging an
enemy target use the Mouse Cursor as the center
of your cross hair and fire away. |
 |
| If you become proficient
at it you eventually may no longer require the
mouse cursor and just use the tracers as a targeting
reference from this view. |
Some simple points
to remember when using an Ostwind are:
1. The maximum firing range of the Ostwind’s
37mm flak cannon is 3.2k.
I would recommend not even firing unless the intended
target is less than 2k away.
2. The firing spread on the Ostwind’s 37mm
flak cannon even when steady does not form a tight
group. The shots tend to jump around slightly
due to recoil. Slight adjustments may be required
when firing.
3. Any aircraft armed with 20mm cannons or better
can easily disable the turret. If you can have
supplies readily available.
4. If you are at a base, park on a concrete surface
so that if bombs are dropped on you, you can land
before impact. |
