How
to Kill / Disable Ground Vehicle with Aircraft |
| If your
base is under threat from a ground vehicle attack
and your vehicle hangar is disabled along with
your base ordinance there is still a way you can
fight back. Any plane with 20mm canons or better
is suitable for the job but the favorite plane
for the task is the IL2. Here are some tips to
help you stay in the fight defending a base against
a ground attack from the air. |
1.
Enemy Supplies - If possible disable
the enemy's troops and supplies from the base
they are spawning from. Notice this tip is first. |
| 2. Oridinance
- If you have ordinance available by all means
use it. Bombs in this situation are always better
than bullets. The dive and attack angles discussed
here apply to dive bombing also. Lifting heavy
bombers and using carpet bombing techniques against
incoming ground vehicles increases your success
in defending your base. But if all you have for
ammunition are canon and machine gun rounds and
time is not on your side, you better get airborne
and use what you have. |
| 3. Angle
of Attack - This is critical in your
success in disabling enemy tanks using canon rounds.
Below is a diagram of an IL2 utilizing different
attack angles against a Panzer IV. The highest
percentage for a successful strike is achieved
in the dark green region. The dive angle here
is 60 degrees or greater. The light green area
provides a lesser percentage for success and the
angle of attack is between 45 and 60 degrees.
Attacking from the green areas also leaves the
panzer defenseless as the attack angles are not
within the tanks weapons range. Attacking at less
than a 45 degree angle places you within the weapons
range of the tank. The orange region reflects
the machine gun range at 1000 yards or less and
the red area is the vertical reach of the main
gun. |
|
|
|
| Attack head on within
the red area at less than 300 ft above the ground
and a good tank crew will shoot you down with
their main gun at 1000 yards or less. |
Attack within the orange area
and you are vulnerable to the tanks machine guns.
All they need is one good hit to take out your
engine or score a pilot wound. |
| 4. Take
Your Time - Be patient! It is recommended
that you climb to at least 3000 feet and start
your attack from that altitude. When you dive,
line yourself up on your target as best as you
can trying to use as little rudder correction
as possible. Your firing solution window is about
2 to 3 seconds maximum and you need at least a
good 2 second burst with canons to disable the
tank's turret. |
Step
by Step |
- Climb to at least 3000 feet.
- Start your attack at about a 60 degree
dive angle. Line yourself up to your target
as best as you can.
- When you get under 600 yards open fire
aiming directly for the tank’s turret.
- At 400 yards pull up and level out, create
some distance, climb, and attack again if
necessary.
|
|
Your
Firing Solution window is 3 seconds maximum
if you are lucky. |
|
|
Slightly lead
your target in the dive. |
When you are
under 600 yards open fire! |
